I. Hello, dear Friend! The topic of this lesson is ‘Seasons and Weather'. Before you start working on it close your eyes and try to imagine a beautiful sunny day. Feel the warm wind that blows into your face and smile. So let's start the lesson with this pleasant moment.

II. Read the following words. Some of them are familiar to you, so learn the words and their translation if they are new to you.

Conditions - умови

Sunny - сонячний

Windy - вітряний

Foggy - туманний

Showery - дощовий; проливний

Look at this list of common weather words. Notice that it is very common to form adjectives by adding ‘-y'.

 Note:

When it rains for a short period of time, we call it a shower, e.g.: "We had several showers yesterday afternoon."

When it is raining a lot we often say it's pouring or it's pouring with rain. This phrase is much more common than "it's raining cats and dogs".

Seasons and Weather

There are four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Every season is beautiful in its own way.

When spring comes nature awakens from its long winter sleep. The days become longer and the nights become shorter. The ground is covered with emerald-green grass and the first flowers. The air is fresh, the sky is blue and cloudless, and the sun shines brightly. The trees are in full blossom. The nightingale begins to sing its lovely songs, and sweet melodies may be heard from every wood and park. The days are warm and everything is full of life and joy.

Spring is followed by summer. The weather is usually fine in summer, but it can be very hot, especially in July. Sometimes there are storms with thunder and lightning. In summer people try to get away from the city noise and spend more time in the open air. They pick mushrooms and berries in the forest, swim in the rivers and lakes, go fishing and boating. Most people prefer to have their holidays in summer.

Autumn begins in September. The days become shorter and the nights become longer. The leaves turn yellow, red and brown and fall to the ground. Most birds fly away to warm countries. There is a short spell of dry sunny weather in September, which is called ‘Indian Summer'. It is a beautiful time when the sky is cloudless, the trees around are golden, the air is transparent and it is still warm. But gradually it gets colder and colder. It often rains in October and November which makes autumn an unpleasant season.

In winter the sun sets early and rise late. The rivers and lakes are frozen over. Everything is covered with snow. Sometimes it is very cold, about 25-30 °C below zero. Going out in such weather isn't pleasant. Winter is a good time for sports. People go in for skating and skiing. Tobogganing is also popular, not as a kind of sports, but rather as a fun.

                   What time is it?   Time

  Як сказати скільки часу по-англійськи& Як запитати, скільки часу по-англійськи?

• Отже основне питання, яке вам можуть задати в значенні «скільки часу» або «котра година» — це «What time is it (now)?» або «what’s the time?». 
• Однак є ще варіанти:

Could you tell me the time, please? — Не могли б ви сказати мені, скільки часу?

Do you know what time it is? — Ви знаєте скільки зараз часу?

Як відповісти на питання про час? Розібравшись, як запитати, скільки часу на англійській, вивчимо можливі варіанти відповідей.

Для початку, ви повинні знати наступне: числівники англійської мови.

• в англійській не люблять вживати 24-годинний час, а зазвичай використовують 12-годинне. Щоб не плутатися вони застосовують скорочення: a.m. для обозгачения вренеми з 00 до 12 і p.m. для часу з 12 до 00 годин. Також, замість a.m. ви можете використовувати вираз — in the morning, а замість p.m. використовувати in the evening.

перед початком відповіді про час завжди треба ставити it’s. Хоча в розмовній англійській допускається просто назвати час:

— What time is it?

— Ten to nine.

1, 2, 3 … годин кажуть просто — one, two, three … o’clock, наприклад, десять годин ранку — ten o’clock a.m.

• замість слова «п’ятнадцять» треба використовувати a quarter (чверть).
• половина позначається словом half [?h?f], без артикля.
• слово minutes (хвилини) в англійській мові зазвичай опускається.

• Щоб надалі не плутатися, варто відразу відзначити і різницю між значеннями o’clock і hour. o’clock — ‘це відмітка на циферблаті годинника, цим словом позначаються рівні (без хвилин) значення часу, а hour (годину) — це тривалість часу у 60 хвилин.

Найпростіший спосіб сказати котра година

Подібно до того, як ми відповідаємо в українській мові, можна просто сказати дві цифри (години і хвилини) один за одним. Приклади:

5:05 — (п’ять нуль п’ять) — five oh five

6:10 — (шість десять) — six ten

7:15 — (сім п’ятнадцять) — seven fifteen

8:20 — (двадцять вісім) — eight twenty

9:25 — (дев’ять двадцять п’ять) — nine twenty five

10:30 — (десять тридцять) — ten thirty

11:35 — (одинадцять тридцять п’ять) — eleven thirty five

12:40 — (дванадцять сорок) — twelve forty

13:45 — (тринадцять сорок п’ять ) — thirteen forty five

16:50 — (шістнадцять п’ятдесят) — sixteen fifty

20:55 — (двадцять п’ятдесят п’ять) — tventy fifty five

Не забуваємо додавати a.m. або p.m. для позначення відповідного періоду доби.

Більш складний спосіб

Для позначення часу в годинах і хвилинах в англійській мові вживаються прийменники past (після), to (до).

Годинник розділені на дві частини — кожна по півгодини.

Для вказівки часу до половини години включно (хвилинна стрілка від 12.00 до 6.00 по циферблату) вживається прийменник PAST (після):

It’s ten past two. Десять хвилин третього (буквально: 10 хвилин після двох, 2:10 14:10).

Для вказівки часу після половини години включно (хвилинна стрілка від 6.00 до 12.00 по циферблату) вживається прийменник TO (до):

It’s ten to two. Без десяти хвилин два чи один годину 50 хвилин (буквально: без 10 хвилин два, 1:50 або 13:50).

Ще приклади:

00:05 (п’ять хвилин на першу ночі) — it’s five past zero a.m.

01:10 (десять хвилин другого ночі) — it’s past ten one a.m.

02:15 (п’ятнадцять хвилин на третю ночі) — it’s a quarter past two a.m.

03:20 (двадцять хвилин на четверту ночі) — it’s twenty past three a.m.

04:25 (двадцять п’ять хвилин на п’яту ранку) — it’s twenty five past four a.m.

05:30 (половина шостого ранку) — it’s half past five a.m.

06:35 (тридцять п’ять хвилин на сьому ранку, а вони говорять без 25 хвилин 7) — it’s twenty five to a seven.m.

07:40 (без двадцяти вісім ранку) — it’s twenty to eight a.m.

08:45 (без п’ятнадцяти дев’ять ранку) — it’s a quarter to a nine.m.

09:50 (без десяти десять ранку) — it’s ten to ten a.m.

10:55 (без п’яти одинадцять ранку) — it’s five to eleven a.m.

12:05 (п’ять хвилин першого дня) — it’s five past twelve p.m.

13:10 (десять хвилин другого дня) — it’s past ten one p.m.

14:15 (п’ятнадцять хвилин третього дня) — it’s a quarter past two p.m.

15:20 (двадцять хвилин четвертого дня) — it’s twenty past three p.m.

16:25 (двадцять п’ять хвилин п’ятого дня) — it’s twenty five past four p.m.

17:30 (половина шостого вечора) — it’s half past five p.m.

18:35 (тридцять п’ять хвилин на сьому вечора) — it’s twenty five to seven p.m.

19:40 (без двадцяти вісім хвилин вечора) — it’s twenty to eight p.m.

20:45 (без п’ятнадцяти хвилин дев’ять вечора) — it’s a quarter to nine p.m.

21:50 (без десяти хвилин десять вечора) — it’s ten to ten p.m.

22:55 (без п’яти хвилин одинадцять вечора) — it’s five to eleven p.m.

• В американському англійською замість past досить часто використовується прийменник after. А замість прийменника to можливе використання прийменників of, before і till.

Для того, щоб простіше запам’ятати, як говорити скільки часу даними способом, використовуйте дані картки по темі "Telling the Time".

Ще словосполучення про час:

for 3 hours — протягом трьох годин;

in an hour — через годину;

in half an hour — через півгодини;

in time — вчасно;

exactly — рівне; наприклад, it’s exactly nine (дев’ять годин); about — приблизно; наприклад, it’s about seven (близько семи годин)

almost — майже; наприклад, it’s almost eight (майже вісім годин).

by twelve o’clock — до дванадцяти годинах;

at noon / midday — опівдні;

at midnight — опівночі;

an hour ago — an hour ago;

from nine to five — з дев’яти до п’яти.
